Tie or Cut?

Posted December 11, 2007 at 9:33AM by FrecklQn

I had my 6 month OBGYN appointment yesterday, and I was prepared to sign papers to get my tubes tied. But, my doctor spent a good amount of time describing the procedure to me, and the more she talked, the less sure I became about getting my tubes tied. This is our 3rd child, and I have pretty rough pregnancies. So, my husband and I have decided this is it, and we'd like to just not think about birth control in the future, so getting my tubes tied immediately after giving birth seemed like a one-stop shop option. However, this is an operation. I'll be pulled away from my newborn within hours of his/her birth, and when I return, I'll be popping pain meds and pretty sore from the surgery, and of course, from giving birth. Then, there's the fact I have 2 other young children to care for when I get out of the hospital, and my husband who will most likely have to return to work rather quickly. So, it sounds like an operation is pretty much the last thing we need at that point in time.

There's also the money issue. If I get my tubes tied, it is covered by insurance. If my husband gets fixed, we do not have coverage. And, of course, my husband has to pull the macho approach, where he says he's not going to get "clipped." (I can talk him into anything, so that's the least of my worries, but it's a hurdle to consider!)

And, of course, there's always contraceptives. . .but, I'm so over them! Any type of hormone-based birth control turns me into a psychotic person. No joke. The slightest alteration in my hormone level makes me feel like I'll slam my car into other cars while I'm driving, or punch holes through the wall if something doesn't go my way. It's bizarre, but real.

So, what's your approach. .. if you're taking one? Just curious if people are happy w/ the bc method.

dishing the dirt, cleaning the chaos

snip, snip...so easy, I sh@t you not. he's fine in like 7 hours. they load him up on relaxers and he comes out with a bag of frozen peas on his junk, you feel sorry for him (or at least pretend) and life is normal in a few weeks...seriously, my hubby went in and it is SO worth it...I made him go at the end of my last pregnancy...if you aren't already "open" (c-section or whatever) don't put yourself through that. nine months times three kids...500 obgyn appts and one little tiny TINY snip is nothing. They go under the sac, make a tiny slit, snip a spaghetti-like thing and one stitch, dissolvable. I'm all for you sitting this one out!

this is a great question. I am not there yet but I have thought about it and it scares me to make such a final decision.

  Life is crazy but wonderful.

I agree with db, snip, snip, snip. It is so much easier on men then women. Believe me. My hubby was walking funny for a day or so, but fine after that. For us it was the other way around with our insurance, it would not cover anything for me, but it only cost us $25, or a regular office visit, for him to have the whole procedure. We have never regretted him getting snipped. I had such a hard pregnancy with our son, and my blood pressure remained high after he was born so I couldn't go on the pill, so he was happy to do it for me.
