Toy Buying Addiction

Posted December 12, 2007 at 9:23AM by FrecklQn

I have a problem. I cannot stop buying toys for my children at Christmas time. I see Christmas as a great opportunity to revamp the old toy collection w/ a new one. Or, to add accessories to exisiting, cool toys that we have. And, as a child, I was definitely spoiled at Christmas time. . .it only seems right!

So I can rationalize every single toy I've purchased, and can even rationalize the last few that I want to get. But, I know I've purchased too much, and my kids are being spoiled. I don't normally spoil them through the year. I only buy toys for them on Christmas and birthdays, actually. I'm not in the practice of buying stuff when we're out. They know we can look at a store, but then, before we leave, the item goes back to the shelf.

So, here I am. I was basically done. Then, my 4 year old told me Santa was bringing her a doll. . . a particular doll. I had decided not to get dolls this year, simply b/c we have a lot. But, the one Santa is bringing her is a good one, I have to admit! So, I'm back to rationalizing that maybe I should get just this one last toy. .. and if I get one for my older daughter, it's only fair I get one for the younger daughter, too.

AAHHHHH! I have a problem!

I am in the same place. We also only buy toys at birthdays and Christmas and I too feel the urge to update our current selection because they seem to have outgrown them all. My family was the same way growing up. We didn't have a lot and so we didn't get stuff throughout the year but at Christmas we did get a good amount of stuff. I say go for it. Your heart is in the right place. and now I feel better about ordering that one las thing too.

  Life is crazy but wonderful.

oh have fun. They aren't spoiled, it is christmas. You shouldn't go into debt to buy it, but if that isn't the case then buy away. That is what is fun about christmas all the pretty packages under the tree, their little faces all excited christmas morning. I have some great pictures of my daughter coming downstairs seeing the big pile of presents and her excited face. It is great. Have fun!!

dishing the dirt, cleaning the chaos

aaaahhh...it's a good problem! all that magic comes from somewhere. and it aint santa. someone has to think about and commit to making the memories. I'm in the same boat...my hubby sees the totals and is like, aaahhh! but it adds up and there are 3 kids and I feel guilty but I still can't stop either. Like you. I don't grab things for the sake of buying but I really try to pick thoughtful gifts...I just like to get a lot of them. then you start to worry, does one kid have more than another. it's all part of the fun I guess

thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I needed to hear that. I just bought the dolls. And, as I was hitting "buy" my older daughter mentioned something else Santa will bring her. But, I was quick to tell her she's already reached her limit with Santa!

  Mommy of 2 Girls!

Don't feel bad, especially since it's not a daily event. A way to counteract (if you want) is to have the kids gather up some toys that are in good shape but they just don't want or play with anymore and donate them to goodwill, a shelter, or send them to someone who can use them anonymously. :)
