Summer treat – Frozen Broccoli?!
Posted June 28, 2007 at 11:00AM by Sticky_Mommy I love my job, it gives me a break from my kids!
My kid is very strange (I’m sure she gets it from her father’s side of the family). Last week she was procrastinating going to bed claiming she was hungry just as I announced it was time to brush her teeth.
I told her she could have broccoli if she was hungry. So I took a piece out of the freezer and handed it to her. She ATE IT! Much to my surprise and she asked for another piece.
So now she asked for her broccoli frozen. And this is from the 3.5 year old who doesn’t like “bean” flavored ice-cream. http://www.mybaby.com/Blog/Sticky_Mommy/Item/858/
What a weird kid. Do you think it’s because it’s from the cabbage family? Hmmm

Recap 1st Birthday Party - Oompa Loompa & Bouncy
Posted June 26, 2007 at 10:47AM by Sticky_Mommy I love my job, it gives me a break from my kids!
I had a great time this past weekend we had two kid birthday parties to attend, one was a friend (Astrid turned 2!) and the next day was our son's 1st Birthday Party. We love to party so this was a great excuse to eat cake and drink.
Ivan's real birthday was earlier in the month, but my MIL is a nurse and works weekends & we wanted her to be there, plus DH was photographing a wedding, I was traveling, etc. so this was a date that worked for everyone. The day turned out great even though there was rain predicted. What made the day extra special was my friend Cindy was visiting from SF and the biggest surprise of the them all was my SIL drove up from North Carolina and showed up at our door hours before the party. It was great, she didn’t tell anyone and we were so thrilled she made it.
The best lesson I learned from hosted this party is to delegate. Ask for help, people love to feel useful and who doesn’t need the extra help?
Here were some of the highlights:
· The theme of the party was “Our Bouncing Baby Boy is One”
· Bouncy Castle – my friend owns one (I know very cool!) which saved me $100 in rental fee which I spent on booze & food
· I made CD favors with Ivan’s photo on the CD and filled it with music to “Bounce to” including songs like Jump by Van Halen, Jump Around by House of Pain, etc, you get the idea.
· My In-Laws & Cindy did most of the food pre and grilling which allowed me to enjoy myself and our friends
· My teenage sister did the face painting. She did a great job – she never did it before and did a great job making butterflies, spiders, flowers, etc. it was a hit with the kids and adults.
All in all it was a hoot. My DD is a winter baby so it was such a nice change to have an outdoor sunny party. It made me want to spend more time with our friends and outside this summer.

I was eating Ben and Jerrys out of the pint container and my 3.5 year old daughter asked what I was eating.
I told her ice cream.
She asked what flavor.
I told her bean flavor.
She said she didn't like bean flavor.
I didn't tell her it was vanilla bean. But I was glad she didn't like bean flavor because I didn't feel like sharing.

CD update at my house
Posted June 22, 2007 at 8:51AM by Sticky_Mommy I love my job, it gives me a break from my kids!
With all this poo & cloth diaper talk on the board lately I was lamenting that we use both, but DH doesn’t use CD’s as much as he should. Well when I got home last night my DS was in a CD. I was so proud.
DH told me a story about earlier in the day when DS was wearing a CD and had a massive blow out and stuff was leaking out…everything/body into the tub for a scrub down. DH is my hero.
Another funny thing about our CD’s is my Maid of Honor sent us diapers as a gift when our son was born in our wedding colors! She thought she was very clever b/c I was bridezilla and wanted our stamps to match our wedding theme, but I digress….

What is Bisphenol A & why should you care?
Posted June 21, 2007 at 12:32AM by Sticky_Mommy I love my job, it gives me a break from my kids!
Bisphenol A is getting into the mouths of our babes. And it's not a good thing.
There's a reason Born Free is advertising on this site. The more we learned about Bisphenol A, the more we got worried about our own kids exposure & what could we do to educate everyone.
Bisphenol A is toxic chemical used to harden or soften plastics, plastics such as infant teething toys, water bottles, food containers, bath books and of course baby bottles. Yuk, it's everywhere! Bisphenol A (spell that fast 3Xs) can alter the function of the thyroid gland, brain, pancreas & prostate. It can also effect the reproductive system, cancer, immunty, early onset of puberty, obesity, diabetes & even hyperactivity.
Bisphenol A leached from baby bottles with regular washings, even if the bottles are not heated!
Suggestions: Until more studies are done, choose glass bottles, use a safer-plastic baby bottle & sippy cups like in Born Free, cut back on drinking water from plastic water bottles, microwaveable food containers, try to keep plastic toys out of babies mouths, esp if they're designed for older kids.

notthemoma responded June 21, 2007 at 12:44AM
wow - that is very scary. I had no idea. I wonder what the effect of all this Bisphenal A is on adults as well. We are surrounded by plastic.
cosmoblue responded June 21, 2007 at 1:13PM
I love my Born Free Bottles! I was going to get the sippy's too, but I didn't like the spout on it.
rockergirrl responded June 21, 2007 at 1:27PM
I hate plastic. Cooking in plastic is the worst thing you can do. All those chemicals going into your food. Blah. There are many many baby companies out there who still also use PVC in their plastics. Even infant teethers. You do not want your baby sucking on PVC. Some companies have banned it but there are still many many toy companies that use PVC too. Throw out the crap, find companies who refuse to use this junk or go for the wood.

Budget Tips? What are you doing for college saving
Posted June 14, 2007 at 10:15AM by Sticky_Mommy I love my job, it gives me a break from my kids!
We are putting away $100 buck a month per kid for college. Since we started when they were born it should be helpful when they are ready to go to school, but it won't be enough. We also have to save for retirement too.
How do you guys work your budget to fit in the day to day stuff & make room for savings? I'm looking for all types of tips. Our biggest spend is food.
mecjg responded June 14, 2007 at 11:38AM
At least you are putting away now. Are you doing the 529 plan?We are putting away $200 per kid per month and I know it will not be enough, hopefully it will be enough for acouple of years of college. Although, my oldest is 6 and the amount is starting to increase much more rapidly (makes us happy). As daycare winds down and other things like afterK programs $$$ we hope to put more money in.401K for the both us for retirement, and some other smaller roths IRA, etc. It just seems like the money just comes in and goes out, but we know it will get better as time moves along. Can anyone say inheritance!!! LOL.Oh, we spend alot on food like you.Good luck!
rockergirrl responded June 14, 2007 at 11:44AM
Savings? What is that? Right now we are able to do our 401Ks and that is about it. I went to college on loans because my parents could not afford it so I don't feel like we have to contribute if we can't. The best advice I have ever gotten is that the best gift you can give to your child is to have your own retirement. I am going through this with my parents right now. They have nothing and it is very hard on them (and us).
dustbunny responded June 14, 2007 at 3:40PM
don't ask me about budgeting- I need highlights and wine. kidding...sort of :)
Sticky_Mommy responded June 14, 2007 at 3:47PM
dustbunny, you slay me. I'm feeling you on the highlights thing, and wouldn't be cool to landscape, go on a vacation, out to eat, buy some clothes for me, etc. this grown up stuff is real work.
birdiehandmade responded June 14, 2007 at 9:21PM
Being a responsible adult is harder than they never told me! We basicly try to get by each week, and keep promising to contribute to our IRAs, but it's honestly been two years since our last contribution. Hopefully as the renovations settle down, we can get back on track? Our weekly breakdown basicly goes 1/3 for food & gas, 1/3 for taxes and loans (my DH is self-employed, so we need to actually pay taxes come tax time), and 1/3 for monthly bills (internet, heat, porn networks, etc.) Wouldn't it be great to do those things Sticky Mommy talks about - going out to eat, buying lawn furniture, a vacation that doesn't involve my car!)I wonder about the college thing though - is it better come financial aid time to have a chunk of money waiting to give, or is it better to have your child's college money invested in something that isn't quite so liquid, like say an investment property or something? What do the loan officers and financial aid people look for? I know if we have the money lyine there, they'll take it. Mightn't it be better to get loans and pay them with your kids from something like a rental property? Any thoughts anyone?
Misda_Sleep responded June 15, 2007 at 9:32PM
All you need is a dollar and a dream :) I've found that most of the time what is given for free is NEVER appreciated. You'll never have enough, and even if you did it won't be fully appreciated. Back in the day when I was in college I found that wealthy-mommy-and-daddy-children didn't focus on school as hard as those that had to contribute. Having to pay for it yourself goes a long way in motivating you to do a better job AND any help that your parents provide you (when paying the bills on your own) will go A LONG WAY and will be FULLY APPRECIATED. So do your children a favor and spend that money on some ice cream ;)
r u really sorry?
Posted June 13, 2007 at 7:00PM by Sticky_Mommy I love my job, it gives me a break from my kids!
Mornings can be crazy at my house, esp on day care days. Everyone wants to eat, get dressed, teeth brushed, etc. Just a panic session. So my husband & I snapped at each other as he was driving away today.
I shouldn't have been crabby, but I was late & stressed and so was he. He call later and we talk about how our day was going, etc. and I told him I was sorry he was so crabby :) this morning & he said he was sorry too. It's hard to me to admit when I'm wrong.
So I want to know...who says you're "sorry" first - you or your partner?
rockergirrl responded June 13, 2007 at 8:22PM
We both do equally but the other is not always ready to receive it yet which sometimes causes more conflict.
birdiehandmade responded June 13, 2007 at 11:15PM
It depends on the situation for us. I have a hard time saying it, but I know sometimes I have to. I have a pretty bad temper, so after 11 years, my husband has found ways to deal with it, and me!Of course in our household, saying "I'm sorry you were so crabby" is not an apologie. It's just saying that you're sorry that they were being an arse. I've tried it before, and my husband will not accept that as an appology. aNyone else?
dustbunny responded June 14, 2007 at 3:57PM
we pretty much just pretend we didn't hate each other at breakfast. we might go 2 days with ugly nasty glares but eventually one of us needs each other with something substantial (kid, house, appointment-wise) and the tension goes backburner...it re-ignites though...then we go another round and then we just get too tired with all the kids to remember who was mean first- it was usally me but he forgets or just doesn't care by the time he wants some loving...hee hee - anyone reading this? just checking- we hardly apologize if we know the fights are tension-based...now if I actually DO something wrong I'll say sorry

I try to learn lessons from others and I'll share this one with ya'll.
Last night I had dinner with some friends who took their kids to the beach & although they put sunscreen on the kiddos before they hit the beach, they didn't reapply after the kids were playing in the water. And well, the kids got their first sunburn. My friends felt terrible.
Lesson learned:
Happy Summer!

Mommy Guilt - Vomit
Posted June 5, 2007 at 10:58AM by Sticky_Mommy I love my job, it gives me a break from my kids!
So I'm on my 2nd biz trip w/o the kids. It would be heaven (you know the whole sleeping in thing, not eating at race pace, going to the bathroom with the door closed and remaining that way - the little things), however my kids are sick. And not the dopey kind of sick, it's the kind where they throw up in the middle of the night & you have to change the sheets & PJ's 3X durning the night kind of sick.
I feel bad enough leaving my husband to single parent it himself for a week, but then you throw the vomit thing on top of that and come on, my guilt scale goes all the way to 11 on a scale of 1-10.
Poor DH calls me at 11 PM his time to ask me where the clean crib sheets are. All I can do is be his life line and offer support over the phone.
FYI when I get home he going surfing for 2 days with his friends so at least he has something to look forward to.
Any suggestion on how to make his life easier?
Smasuzzo responded June 5, 2007 at 11:20AM

dustbunny responded June 5, 2007 at 3:17PM
I say, and don't tell him :) - you shouldn't feel guilty at all, seriously. it's not your fault, they are sick kids - it happens- and he'll be surfing while you are home washing crusty barf sheets. If your husband were throwing up and needed you there, then you could allow yourself to feel bad. anyway, to make his life easier, tell him he can go surfing when you get home and before he goes off to relax w/o kids, you'll do some sort of special strip tease for him or something:).
