Pumping at Work

Posted June 21, 2007 at 5:03PM by akinvt

I have the pleasure of  sucking milk out of my breasts with a machine several times a day while at work.  This wonderful task takes place in an empty office (empty of people not furniture) with a wall of windows which face another office building.  I sit in the corner slumped over the breast shields with my back to the window.  Thankfully nobody can hear the pulsating sound of the machine through the walls, at least nobody will admit to it when asked.

My current work partner is a young, single male who has had a crash course in parenthood through listening to me.  Fortunately his father is an ob/gyn so listening to frantic women share way too much information is nothing new to him.  Until yesterday he was protected from my daily pumping sessions.  I would quietly get up from my desk and tell him that I needed a "comfort break" and he would just nod with a slight grin.  But then came yesterday.  While sitting in an empty conference room (the office was occupied) my coworker had to come speak to me through the door about an impromptu conference call that was waiting for my attendance.  I frantically told him that, no, I could NOT participate at the moment.  Then the phone rang.  I picked it up to find that same coworker on the other end of the line in utter (udder...) shock at the horrible sound coming through the line!  Can the sound of the breast pump be heard through the walls?  No.  Can it be heard through the telephone?  Hell yeah!  Needless to say that convinced him to leave me alone.

The story does not end there.  Today I was sitting in the unoccupied office with my dress pulled up and tucked neatly under my chin.  Note - wearing a dress while breastfeeding or pumping is not a great idea.  Along comes a knock on the door.  My coworker had answered my phone only to find my mother on the end letting me know that it was time to come home and nurse.  That is when my coworker had to cross the final boundary and declare, "she is pumping right now."

I love my job, it gives me a break from my kids!

You had me at ...the pleasure of sucking milk out of my breast.

I too am nursing Mom who works outside the home. Your story has me laughing with tears in my eyes - thank you!

With my first kid, my office mate was a freash face out of college who got grossed out when my kid guy rubbed him as I squeezed my way behind his chair to my desk. I got to pump in the bathroom & another co-worker made me a sign that said "Milking in process."

Read my other post about what happened to me a few months back http://www.mybaby.com/Blog/Sticky_Mommy/Item/228/

I should also fess up about the time I got busted while pumping & driving...

That post is hilarious! I know exactly the black briefcase bag that you are talking about - I have the same one. It always looks so obvious to me but I guess it blends more than we think.

I haven't dared to pump and drive yet, I don't think I could afford all of the batteries!

It is stories like this that remind me of my time spent pumping in a closet with no door in an office full of men. It also reminds me why I am glad that I got laid off. Props to you for pumping!

oh yes. pumping at work is so hard. I did it with my first child. The entire building had two bathrooms for a few offices and I would sit in this dark windowless room having people knocking on the door waiting all the time. It was so hard. What kept me going was knowing it was for the health of my child. That was my drive. Good for you to keep on pumpin'. Know you are not alone.

I have a car plug for my pump - hands free! I've had to use the battery plug when traveling for biz. That's real cool pumping in airport bathrooms.
