Positive stories for little girls

Posted May 4, 2007 at 8:37AM by amccrea

One of my favorite stories for little girls is "The Paper Bag Princess" by Robert Munsch and illustrated by Michael Martchenko.  If you aren't familiar with the story you should really go pick it up, right now, not kidding.  I don't know about anyone else but I find it completely frustrating that the most popular tales for children are ones with passive female characters (ie the princess waiting for her prince to come whisk her away to some castle in the sky where they live happily ever after).  If anyone has any other favorite tales that actually empower girls I would love to hear some suggestions.

I love my job, it gives me a break from my kids!

Or the parents die! Nemo, Bambi, etc.

My daughter loves Disney's Mulan - definitely not a passive character.. For older girls look for a series of books called Dealing with Dragons - The main character, Princess Cimorine, is defintely unconventional. The stories are hysterical!

Or the evil stepmother has issues...snow white, hansel and gretel beauty. or no mother...rumplestiltskin, beauty and the beast. what happened to all the mothers and what the hell is wrong with the dads choice in replacements?
