Who Wears the apron in Your house?

Posted May 24, 2007 at 7:24PM by birdiehandmade

So, this is a sort of a survey to answer a question that I've been pondering for some time.  How do you handle dinner time at your house?  Who cooks?  Who cleans?  For fairly non-traditional people, my husband and I have taken on fairly traditional roles as the years have gone by.  He goes off to work all day, and I am at home being mom.  "Naturally", I make dinner most nights.  (Don't hate him yet.  If I've had a rough day, he'll step in, and he does cook once and a while.  Plus, no offense to him, but he's not all that good of a cook, so I don't want him to cook EVERY night.)

I've heard wild rumors of saintly partners who go to work all day, and then come home and cook the dinner for the family.  Is this true?  What do you do at your house?  I'm just curious.  (No, this isn't fuel for some ongoing argument!)

I think it would be interesting to know this. :)

My wife and I both cook. We both do the laundry and we both do the cleaning. (And yes, she'd say the same - I'm not boasting.)

like you we have taken on very traditional roles. I cook most of the meals because my husband gets home late enough that it would be too late to eat if we waited for him to get home and then cook dinner. I really don't mind though. I love cooking and I do see me being home with the kids and cooking as part of my job and I don't mean that in a demeaning way at all. I love my job. He will either clean up from dinner or while I am cleaning up he will be getting the boys bathed. He leaves it up to me which I want to do. I do end up doing most of the housework but it is also because I am the one home full time. We both share a lot of the chores on the weekends and I feel very lucky because he is very equal in sharing the kids duties and stuff. If I was the one working full time out of the house and he was full time I would expect it to be the same I guess.

It does not surprise me that your husband is not a good cook. He probably does not clean the dishes well, or fold the laundry correctly...which tells me that he is not letting the rest of us down! You see, if we were good at it, we would be asked to do it more...and that would not be fun. Mediocrity has its usefulness..Seriously, some things we are good at (I am still searching) and others we are not...sorry

At our house DH does most of the cooking when he gets home from work/school. He is not a very good cook, but I am so much worse. I swear that I have burned water in the microwave it was black. I didn't even think that was possible. We eat a lot of convenience foods. Luckily DD is just starting to eat solids and is not yet eating what we eat so I have time to make a change. I am determined to learn to cook. No one cleans, it is a problem. I am consulting the Flylady for help with this issue. So I guess I hope to take on a traditional role.

Speaking of help with cooking, check out www.savingdinner.com. I love having shopping lists and menus emailed to me every week, and the recipes are great!

I love my job, it gives me a break from my kids!

Well, I do work outside the home and do the cooking. DH is freelance so when he's not working he's with the kids. Maybe he'll make dinner 2X per week. He feeds the kids b4 I get home or as I'm walking through the door, but I want more then hummus, so I cook. He washes the dishes. It sux when I have to make dinner b/c all I want to do is play with the kids b4 they go to bed!
