The Big 3

Posted July 19, 2007 at 9:47PM by cosmoblue

Today we took DD to get her MMR. I was totally wishy washy on whether I was going to do it or not. We refused the Varicella by saying it was inconvient for our trip to Ohio on the 31st. I don't actually plan on giving it to DD at all if I can help it. Hopefully when she is six some kid will come to school and go home with chicken pox and DD will catch it. Otherwise we will give her option to do it when she is 12 or 13. Now I just hope that she doesn't have a reaction to it especially on the 31st when we have to travel all day to Ohio. Why oh why can't vaccines be hypo-allergenic with no side effects. I think before the next DC I will have to do a bit more research on them all. I don't feel good about having done it.

I opted out of the Chicken pox vax too. I also do not do the flu vax for my kids. My pediatrician only suggested that if they don't get the Chicken pox by age 12 to then consider it.

what happened to the day when kids actually just got chicken pox lol. I remember the experience pretty positively. Oatmeal baths, disney movies, and lots of pink creamy stuff lol... other than that I felt pretty good and drove my mom up the wall... plus its kind of fun... part of my eyebrow is white... and has been since... i had A HUGE HONKING chicken pock and it turned part of my eyebrow white.... always a good story to tell

The two main reasons are: it is more convenient for parents to give the shot because then they don't have to take time off of work when their kid gets sick and it makes the drug company lots of money.

  Life is crazy but wonderful.

I gave my kids the chicken pox vax, I did it because having the chicken pox is awful and if you get it as an adult it is deadly, I learned that when a friend of my dad's spent a couple of weeks in intensive care with it and they weren't sure he would make it. When my daughter was in kindergarten her entire class had chicken pox except for her and she was happy to avoid it after hearing what her friends went through. She was also exposed at 2 weeks old and developed a mild rash which the doctor said may have been the disease. Plus chicken pox can re-appear when you are older as shingles which is a very painful disorder.
