Is It That Crazy?

Posted May 31, 2007 at 8:28PM by cosmoblue

Is it that crazy that I am vegan? I just had to explain to some people that are curious about the lifestyle what it was about. I always hear "I couldn't do it, I love food too much", "What do you eat", "How do you get protein?", "But, you eat fish right?", " You let your daughter eat cheese at least right?" I do not feel like it is that big of a deal, but I am constantly forced to think about it when other people are concerned. There are even people that I try to hide it from. If the ADA says it's healthy why can't people accept it. I should be used to it by now, but there are some days that I have a hard time defending myself.

no it isn't crazy. as long as your DD is getting proper nutrition you are all set. I have been a vegetarian for 15 years and I am raising both my children vegetarian also. I too get a lot of flack from people. I know raising vegan kids is a bit trickier but as long as you are making sure she is ok then just stick to you guns and try to blow off what others say. It is hard though.

I love my job, it gives me a break from my kids!

No, not crazy at all. Maybe the people who are asking you haven't been exposed to a lot of Vegans and don't understand what it means. Think of yourself as an ambassador of sorts. It is weird that people can feel free to comment on your choice of food to feed your kid, but if you questioned them on what they feed themselves or their own kids they might feel offended…But that’s got to get old to keep explaining yourself. Maybe you can make hand outs!

no. not crazy. I have been studying a bit about Jainism in India- they are all alive & well living a strict vegetarian, mostly vegan (many, many completely vegan)lifestyle. There is a whole non-violence component to being vegan, which I completely respect. It includes everything from the harsh treatment of cows for milk all the way to the sacredness of an egg (it's for life, not consumption). Also- you probably know all this but I just read about it - it's changing my perspective. So, no, not crazy-
