Toys

Posted June 20, 2007 at 10:19PM by cosmoblue

So today I put batteries in one of the toys that I bought DD for her birthday almost three weeks ago. It is the Leap Frog Little touch LeapPad. I got so excited when it turned on it makes all of these cool sounds and DD giggled at it which she rarely does at her toys. I was glad that she liked it. Then I looked around at all of her toys and though wow this is a lot and she is only 12 months old. I felt a little irritated that she has so many toys, many of them that she has no interest in. I thought I should just take all of her toys and sell them and buy a bunch of Haba and Melissa and Doug toys. Seeing her play with brightly colored wooden toys makes me feel good. It is so wholesome, I guess.

It is so easy to end up with a ton of noisy plastic toys when birthdays and the holidays come around. I personally can't stand them. I have found for the most part they get attention when they are first opened and then end up in my basement anyways because they don't get played with. What my kids have always played with most even having other more flashy toys around at times are:
wooden blocks
legos
play silks ( it amazing what these become every day)
books, books, books
musical instuments
play store/kitchen (wooden cash regiser, food etc)
puzzles
art stuff

I find limiting the amount of toys that are around helps too. If you find you have too many try rotating them every so often. Some go in the closet at times and then switch them out. I believe kids get overwhelmed if there too many choices around. A few good quality toys will go a lot further.

  Life is crazy but wonderful.

I agree. My kids have so much that every year I have a huge yard sale where I sell a lot of hardly used toys with all the pieces most of the time. Some things I have to sell simply because we have no room. The few toys I keep are usually the educational toys and I have few melissa & doug toys that are great.
