Uhoh! One solution (as I'm sure you talked with them very sternly) would be to leave the sitter a key which she/he gives back to you when you return home. Although it sounds like they are pretty clever, and might come up with something new! At least they have a 'sense of humor'

the good thing was it was midday, another au pair was with her and I was at the neighbors...and yes, you're right, I should at the least stash a key for her to have outside...they thought they were pretty clever...
