wine time cont...

Three is for me!

But seriously...has anyone tried "pumping and dumping" while breastfeeding? Any ill affects on baby? I really want to know if it is safe. I love a glass of merlot while winding down from the day, after kids are in bed.

I hope I don't get in trouble here. The fog of age may be skewing my memory, but I'm pretty sure my midwife told me that it was okay to have a glass if you timed it right - as in nurse, drink, not nurse for a few hours while the alcohol wore off. Nothing crazy like polishing off the bottle by yourself, but a glass with dinner or whatever.

The lactation consultant said that as long as you don't nurse within 2 hours of your sensible drink you are good to go. She also says that when you don't feel the effects anymore you are probably safe which ever comes first.

I agree with both birdiehandmade & cosmoblue. Alcohol acts in your milk as it does in your bloodstream. I would only worry about having to pump and dump if you have to nurse right away or something. I never did that. I just did the timing thing like everyone has said so far. As long as it isn't all the time you are fine.

I love my job, it gives me a break from my kids!

Oh, I'm really going to stir it up - I've never drank as much booze or caffine since becoming a parent. I drank coffe and througout my pregnancy & had a glass of wine or beer 1 or 2X's per week after 25 weeks. I also breastfeed and have a glass of wine or a cocktail w/dinner 4X per week and nurse my son after an hour after. My lactation consultant said as long as you don't feel buzzed from the caffine or wine, the baby won't either. And to stick to a glass/cup of each. Maybe I'm lucky, but I've never found anything I eat effect my kids through my breast milk.

Good to know. Thank you all. I may have my first glass tonight with my husband when he gets home from his trip!
