Mommy Time Out

Posted June 23, 2007 at 3:23PM by momotogo

I saw this at the store and had to pick it up just to share it with you.  Who knows, it may be rot gut, but the label is priceless.

How to not be eaten alive by bugs

Posted June 16, 2007 at 11:23AM by momotogo

Does anyone have suggestions for keeping the bugs at bay?  Prefer something that doesn't have DEET or some questionable toxic substance in it.  For us it seems to be worse in the late afternoon and swarming (ok that's a little dramatic) to the tenderest flesh. My guy seems hypersensitive to mosquito bites would love to prevent, but if anyone has a good suggestions for topical treatment, that would be appreciated as well.

I use Burt's Bees bug stuff. Nothing is perfect of course but it seems to help. And just keep them away from those high bug times you mentioned. My kid's skin react super strong to bites. I use After Bite for kids. The active ingredient is Eucalyptus oil.

  Life is crazy but wonderful.

Yard guard really works, it has the bad stuff but you don't spray it on you, you spray it around the area you are using. Also the off lamps really work well. For bug bites that are really bad I have used benadryl topical cream, it is an anti histamine.

We just got back from the Pediatrics office & they said deet is fine for kids - any thoughts?

My feelings on deet products are if you live in an area prone to ticks (ie. lyme disease) use it. Other cases the Burt Bee's and Cal. baby are good. Happy Outdoors! Oh boy....mud pies, here we come!!!!! :)

A couple of important product recalls

Posted June 14, 2007 at 9:03PM by momotogo

Last month there was a recall of Infant Car Seats made by Evenflo. The recall involves Evenflo Embrace Infant Car Seat/Carriers made before April 8, 2006. The recalled car seat/carriers have model numbers beginning with 317, 320, 397, 398, 540, 548, 549, 550, 597, 598, or 599. The model number and production date information can be found on a white label on the bottom of the carrier and on the top of the convenience base.  If you're not sure, here's the web address to find out more information:  www.embracehandle.com

The other one is regarding counterfeit Colgate toothpaste found in discount stores in 4 states, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland. The label, shows it as being manufactured in South Africa but Colgate-Palmolive said it doesn't import toothpaste from South Africa to the US. The packaging also contains several misspellings.  Here's a link to the news article:

http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N14427041.htm

I'm not the alarmist type, at the same time it's good to know what's going on out there & I find it hard to keep up with stuff sometimes.  If you have a beef with a product, you might not be the only one, speak up, you can report it at the US Consumer Product Safey Commission at:  http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prerel.html

Be happy & be safe my friends

How do you get your kids to help out?

Posted June 14, 2007 at 4:22PM by momotogo

Tidying up after kids is exhausting and I consider myself domestically impaired in the cleaning department.  Getting them to participate in the process is challenging but it can be done.  My 7 year old whines about the overwhelming task of cleaning his room and it does get trashed.  His biggest issue?  He doesn't know where to start.  Give them one task that will make the biggest impact and make them feel successful.  If there are clothes everywhere, just pick up all the clothes and put them in the hamper.  One task completed, then go onto the next one thing....pick up all your legos and put them in the box.  Providing them with a place to put it away or keep it organized helps alot too. Break it down into more manageable bits and they will feel like they achieved something - it works for grownups too.  Making it into a game works too, we play beat-the-clock.  How much can you get off the floor in 15 minutes?  It gives them a finite time so they don't think they have to do it all day and they're motivated to work pretty fast. It works especially well if you have siblings racing the clock & each other.  What works for other people?

  Three is for me!

Unfortunately I've tried everything to outsmart my 7 yr old twins, but nothing worked. Until the day I went into their room and threw everything into the "garbage". Which was a new, clean garbage bag that I put everything that was on the floor in while they were watching. Now they are more motivated to pick things up. Slowly I am adding things from the garbage bag back to their room without their knowing. LOL At least it worked!!!

I bet that got their attention. Have they noticed any of the returned items mysteriously reappearing?

my kids are still young so I am not sure how to do it with the older ones but with mine ( ages 2 & 5 1/2) I just have pick up times throughout the day. Before lunch and quiet time we pick up from the morning, before dinner/bed we pick up from the afternoon. We have a "clean up" song we sing too which helps transition them into it.
