Weekend update

Posted September 17, 2007 at 8:23AM by rockergirrl

I missed the beautiful fall weekend because I was sick in bed.  I was hoping to feel much better today but I don't.  I woke up  at 3:00am and could not sleep because I was coughing so much.  I got up for an hour waiting for my cough medicine to kick in and finally got back to bed this morning at 4:40.  the alarm went off at 6:00 to get everyone up and ready for the day.  Luckily my DH is going to work from home today so he took my oldest DS to school.  He at least will be here to help out  a bit today.  Even though being sick sucks, sometimes it is nice to slow things down in your life.  I finally got this new batch of nursing reminder  bracelets done that I am going to sell.  In case you don't know, a nursing reminder bracelet is something a nursing mom wears on  her wrist and switches to the side she needs to nurse on at the next feeding.  I always just stuck a hair rubber band on my writs but these are much nicer looking and make great gifts.

here is my new batch

I have been on the verge of pulling a britney and shaving my head this weekend.  I am trying to grow it out but I always get to the same point with it and then cut it.  I like myself with shorter hair but I haven't had long long hair since college and I really want to get to that point but right now it is driving me insane!

Oh and on top of being sick my Aunt flow decided to visit me.  Now I have massive cramps on top of this hacking cough.  I think I am just going to soak in the tub for a few hours.

Friday 9/7 & Saturday 9/8

15th Annual South End Art Hop
Burlington Vermont

Over 500 artists throughout 86 indoor sites displaying thousands of works of art, as well as workshops, performances, and outdoor sculpture throughout Burlington’s South End, September 7 + 8

Last year they had their first ever fashion show.  It was a smashing success so they decided to do it again this year.  There will be two shows this year.  Clothing on Friday night,  jewelry, accessories, kids and pets on Saturday.

I will be showing three necklaces from my new collection in the Saturday show.  I will also have a table set up with my full inventory for sale before and after the show.  Stop by if you are in the area.  The Saturday show starts at 3pm.  Come early though and shop from the different designers.

Read about the show (I get a mention) in todays Burlington Free Press article

I'm Trying

Posted September 5, 2007 at 3:16PM by rockergirrl
www.findbarefootbooks.com

I'm trying.  I'm really trying to get into the whole public school system thing.   I am so used to causal preschool where you go into the building, talk to the teacher, take your time leaving, have a say in what goes on etc.  Now we stand outside, see the teacher for a second if we are lucky, and just have to trust the system.  Trust the system.  This is what everyone keeps telling me I have to do.  I was horrified to find out my child who does not drink milk (not because of allergies) now drinks it twice a day because milk is all the school serves at snack and lunch.  What?  No water?  I was told there is a water fountain in the hallway if the children want water.  I am not saying milk is like soda or anything here, but I do think water should be served right along side of milk.  My DS drinks soy milk with his cereal in the morning and has a cup at dinner time but he has never had a glass of cow milk in his life and now he has to drink it twice a day at school because that is all they offer.

Trust the system?  You are talking to a girl who never trusted the system since the day she was born.  I was the girl in school who fought the system from as early as I can remember.  I remember fighting hall passes, and bells, protesting one year because state did not acknowledge Martin Luther King Day (the next  year the school started holding assemblies), it seems I was always rocking the boat in school.  I pined over all the kids who went to the nearby Waldorf school system.  I never felt like I belonged where I was.  I sucked at testing, math and science.  I did well in English, Social Studies, music and the arts.  I didn't learn the way others learned and because of that I suffered.  My point here is that I did not trust the system as a child and I am now finding myself surrounded by those same thoughts and feelings again.

Of course I am much older and wiser now but my core has not changed.  This time around instead of total rebellion I will choose to become an active member in the school.  Yes Rockergirrl will join the PTO.  I firmly believe parents have an important role in public education.  There is a place for our opinions and ideas.

Watch out PTO - here I come.

interested in homeschooling? I was homeschooled and it was cool...you can use all the resources vt has to offer...but can you teach your own kids? luckily, though, for homeschoolers, the "work" day ends by 12 noon...because there is no "system" overload, behavior issues, wasted time, arbitrary tasks...work until work is done.

I have always been interested in it. Just not totally sure if it is for me. My DH is much more into public school.

I don't think you should "trust" the system. I never trusted the system when it comes to my kids. I have one rule I am the boss of my kids. I know teachers are busy in the morning and in the afternoon so I always write a note to them or I call and leave a message to have them call me back when they are on break. I have always found that to work. If you do not drink milk they should not be forcing that on your child, you simply tell them that it is against your beliefs and they should accomodate your family beliefs. A cup of water is not too much to ask. The PTO is a great place to start.

  Mommy of 2 Girls!

Unfortunately, the public school system has to have procedures/inventory that apply to "most" children. Water is not much to ask for, but then is it bottled? If not, that will be asked for next, then juice, and so on. I overall believe in the public school system. Becoming a part of it will be a great asset to your family. I myself can't decide between homeschool and public, but I did go to public and mostly enjoyed it. Other students were what mostly ruined it for me as a child. I think you have the right attitude, just be realistic in your expectations, be firm in your beliefs, and make school a better place!!!! :)

I agree with wilmom to a point. You do have say to the teacher what you believe and if your child hasn't had milk ever before it is a family belief, culture thing and should be respected. A cup of water is not much, if your child were lactose intolerant or allergic to milk they would accomodate and there is no difference. Personally I like public school, our school is really nice the teachers are always willing to help and I am very involved with my kids education.

I understand that public school has to apply to the masses but I guess I don't see the big deal about selling bottled water at lunch. I don't compare starting to sell water to juice. In this day and age when schools are under the watchful eye to improve what they offer children that water would be one up there.

wow. water should be the first thing that ALL schools offer children, then milk and especially since so many kids are lactose intolerant Soy milk. keep the juices and soda away from the kids. it does nothing for them except rot their teeth and we are the ones paying to have those teeth fixed...not the schools. Nutrition should be right up there with their education.
you go rockergirl! water is not asking much neither is soy milk option.

Ahhh, I am getting old. I was thinking that this was lunch for little kids where they bring the cart to class and serve snack. If this is in the lunchroom???? Wow, only milk is strange, so many kids are lactose intolerant! In lunchroom we had water, oj, apple, 2 percent, whole, and chocolate milk!

Bento Box Review

Posted September 5, 2007 at 11:08AM by rockergirrl

My Bento box came just in time for my sons first full day of school yesterday.  He was so excited when it came in the mail on Saturday and he continued to practice opening it up and using the small containers all weekend. Overall so far I am super psyched with the product.  The picture is of the lunch I packed him yesterday.  The picture is bad but it consists of a bean, cheese and salsa burrito, grapes, corn chip and salsa and two little whole grain cookies. It goes into a super cute laptop style insulated bag.   A fork and spoon fit in to the side next to the compartments.  The box closes up and then goes into the laptop style bag which also fits a small water bottle that came with the kit.  One thing of warning if ordering the full kit like this - it does not come with their recycled ice pack to use with the insulated carrying bag.  I did not read carefully enough when I ordered it.  The company where I ordered it does not sell the icepacks but if you order the kit through laptoplunches.com directly you can order the ice packs at the time you place your order.  The only other thing I am not sure about is I did  choose the kit with the insulated bag to put the box in.  The company is huge on the fact that this system has been tested and is lead free, but I have to admit when it came and I saw the vinyl insulated bag made in China I cringed even though it has been tested.  You can buy the kit with a neoprene case instead it just doesn't have a handle.  Overall I am excited about this product.  I really do feel the system helps you to make healthier choices for your child and saves on a lot of waste.  He loved using it yesterday and found it easy to open and deal with (he is almost 6).

Yes it was. Which is another minus on getting the full kit. I am just going to by a SIGG bottle instead to use for him.
