Kids Speak up for Epilepsy

Posted January 23, 2008 at 10:19PM by rockergirrl

My sister and her son both have epilepsy. My sister had her first seizure her freshman year of college and has been taking medication every since. She is lucky in that she was able to find a medication to control her seizures. She didn't have another one for 25 years after the first one came on. Her son has not been so lucky. He was diagnosed at age 3. He is now 9 and he has spent the last 6 years of his life living with epilepsy. After taking every medication available in the United States and Canada and after brain surgery last year he is still unable to find constant relief. He recycles through all of the available medications. They will work for a certain amount of time and then he breaks through them. At his best his seizures only come on at night. At his worst point he once had a period of 10-20 seizures a day. He is possibly looking at having a second brain surgery this year.

Kids Speak Up! is a national conference for youth leaders with epilepsy. It provides 7-16 year olds with a unique opportunity to educate elected officials and staff about the disease. It’s also the first chance for many participants to speak out and meet other youth with epilepsy.

50 families are awarded scholarships for the child and one adult to attend the event this year.

I am extremely proud to announce that my nephew was chosen as one of the children who get to go. They will speak in Washington in order to raise awareness of this disease.

There are so many people like my nephew who have been unable to find medicine to control their epilepsy. There is still so much work to do.

Wow, what an honor to be 1 of 50 kids to speak. Here's to hoping more $ are thrown at epilepsy.

Bye bye plastic bags

Posted January 10, 2008 at 9:14AM by rockergirrl

By now you all should have switched to reusable cloth bags at the grocery store. Stop making excuses and buy them. Most chain grocery stores sell them now and they are cheap. I love mine. In order to remember them each time I go I just put them back in the car after I have unloaded my groceries so they are already in the car for my next trip.

The other benefit to keeping them in your car is that they work for more places than the grocery store. We have been focused on using them in food stores only but how about bringing them along next time you go to buy other items? Stopping at Target or your local drug store for just a small thing will guarantee a plastic bag will be in your future unless you choose no bag or start to bring your own.

I started writing this post the other day and I was pleased to read this morning in the paper that China has decided to ban plastic bags. Read the story here. I think this is amazing. My prediction right now is we will soon see an increase in other countries taking large strides in environmental changes and the US will be left in the dust. All our recent bitching about how bad China is will come back to haunt us when we are the last country to make any major changes because of what I believe to be a lazy approach to change for fear of people thinking their rights are being taken away. Now is the time to step up people.

I firmly believe that  the small changes each household can make will add up and make a difference but this bottom up approach isn't flying with me as the only answer anymore. It is time the US starts the from the top approach. Yes consumers can say alot with their buying power but it my opinion it is now up to the major companies to make changes. Stop making bad cleaning products that we know hurt our environment and our health. I think the companies are finally catching on to this green movement and some are trying to cash in on it by making a more natural version of their chemical products. It will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

For now I am all for banning those stupid plastic bags. If people really are so lazy they can't carry their own bag with them we have truly reached an all time low.

dishing the dirt, cleaning the chaos

the other day, i brought my own canvas and plastic bags (reused) from home to shaws and they only give you the three cent rebate for the canvas bags...if you bring a plastic, it doesn't count! silly hey? not that the three cents/bag matters to me but it obviously matters to shaws!

I think they should chrge three cents/ bag and people would remember more :)

Good idea and reminder. Going to local fairs will sometimes be a great find for those cloth bags FREE!!!
That is how we got ours. Our grocer gives us 10 cents back everytime we use them (that for each bag!) and 5 cents for each paper bag we use. It pays for itself!
Love it.

Menu planning

Posted January 7, 2008 at 10:01AM by rockergirrl
www.findbarefootbooks.com

Every week I kick myself because I end up spending more than I wanted too.  One thing that has really helped me keep a cap on it though is by  menu planning.  Each week I actually plan out what meals I am going to make.  I try to always have at least 6-7 days worth of meals.  Now I know this sounds harder but it really does help.  I found that once I broke the meals into types or categories it helped.  For example I knew that once a week I made a pasta, pizza, soup etc.  So I start my list knowing in my head the basic categories of foods I generally make in a week.  Mine typically looks like this:

Pasta
Pizza
Burrito
Soup
Stir-Fry
Veggie Burgers
Other

Those are my basic categories.  Then when I plan my menu for the week I make sure I have the basics to make a meal in that category.  Sometimes I have specific recipes I am using so I will write down detailed ingredients that I need for each one.  So my next step would look like this.

Pasta -  Stuff to make sauce, pasta of choice, parm. cheese, bread, salad
Pizza - dough, sauce, cheese
Burrito - tortillas, salsa, refried beans
Soup - whatever ingrediants I need for the soup I have chosen
Veggie Burgers - veggie burgers, potatoes, frozen veggie
Other - I do try to make something new at least once a week.  I save these meals for the weekends when I have more time.

So that becomes my basic list.  At least by filling out this basic list I know I have enough stuff to make 6-7 meals that week.  I have found by doing it this way I save money because I am buying exactly what i need to make the meals that week.  It is also less stressful because I don't have to frett about what I am making each night.  I keep the menu plan on my refridgerator so each day I can just pick from the list.

It has really helped me save money and time.  Now if only I can get better about all the other stuff I end up buying.

  Life is crazy but wonderful.

I agree meal planning is the key to keeping costs down. I do the same thing. The one thing that I need to do more of is plan my meals around what is on sale. I have started to do that. I also make meals that last at least two days.

I also agree. This past weekend, I even went as far as to pre-make a bunch of stuff and then freeze it. So, when we come home, all I have to do is warm it up. Our schedules are so hetic, that I am hoping this will take away the temptation of ordering out or picking up stuff-

This is my goal for myself when we get in a house. I plan to cook more and do so with meal planning. I am just not motivated to do so right now, but I'm trying. It's a good thing to do.

Planning is required and is very useful in saving time.Sometimes things don't go the way you plan and when something goes againt my plan,I tend to break on the plan and just don't seem to stick to my plans...

How cool - reading is so important. If a child spends just 20 minutes a day reading, it gives them the foundation they need to be successful!
Thanks for bringing this up, I will check out the web site!

Congraulations! It's great to find work that is in alignment with your heart and soul. Confusius said something to the effect, 'find a job that you love and you will never work another day in your life'

Peace.
