Christmas in July

Every summer I wait for my local greenhouse Claussen's
to have their famous all you can carry sale. This year did not
disappoint. For $50 I was allowed to load up a double decker cart with
as much as I could. The plants were layered on top of each other in my
car in order to fit them all. I was like a kid in a candy shop.

Here is my car packed with goodness.

I was giddy beyond belief.
So I decided to create a new garden around my once empty brick patio. I wanted to make a garden patio out of it.
I am happy with the results.

The
rest of the flowers went to fill in the front yard garden I created
this spring and a small one on the side of my house. I was also able to
fill many pots for the brick patio and my deck. It was the perfect
thing to do on our first day of sunshine in a week.

Localvore movement

Posted July 24, 2008 at 9:41AM by rockergirrl
www.findbarefootbooks.com

I have been on a mission to become a localvore.  If you are wondering what that is, a localvore is is a person who eats only locally-grown and produced food.  I am fortunate to live in a state that has a leading part in this movement.  On top of of all of the local farmers, crafters etc in VT we are also lucky to have many locally owned restaurants and stores who support this effort by selling and using their products.  With the oil issue being what it is now is the time to be looking inside your own state and finding what products you can buy locally instead of products that were shipped from across the country or from other countries.

Taking on this challenge hasn't been too hard.  In the summer and winter I get all of my vegetables from a local CSA Farm Share and buy as much as I can locally of other products as well.  My Eggs, maple syrup, butter, cheese, veggies, fruits, salad dressing and flour all come from VT.  There are some things I have had to slide on.  For instance I can't yet give up avocados or bananas.  This movement has taught me though to shift my eating habits quite a bit.  I have become more of a seasonal eater.  Since I get all of my veggies from my local CSA I eat what I get from them.  This means no salads in the winter because there isn't any lettuce.  The summer months are filled with salads, tomatoes, squash, beans, carrots peas and greens.  The winter months are filled with carrots, potatoes, fall squash, spinach and root vegetables.  All foods they store all winter.  I am able to get VT apples all winter too because Champlain Orchards does winter storage as well.  On top of this I grow a small garden in my back yard.  This year I have 6 monster tomato plants, 4 pepper plants, peas, beans, squash, corn, cucumbers and pumpkins.

Again this means shifting my fruit intake.  I no longer buy apples from Argentina and New Zealand (where most are from in the grocery stores), I am trying to wean off of bananas, and I do still give in to grapes but only when they are from CA and not Mexico.   I was giddy with joy when I went to the store yesterday to find organic local plumbs grown by Champlian Orchards where I also get my apples.

It is maddening to me how much of our food is produced outside of the US.  Most of the big chain food stores do not list on their tags where the food is from but the local food coop that I shop at does.  It is scary.  VT is taking major leaps ahead in becoming a bit more self sufficient.  It takes some adjustment in your diet but it is so worth it.

New Mom again

Getting a dog has been like having another baby.  He needs constant supervision, puts more stuff in his mouth than my children ever did,  gets me up in the middle of the night and needs constant attention.  I am loving  every minute of it.  This dog has been a blessing in our lives.  He hasn't had any accidents in the house, plays fetch, sits and waits before we cross the street and he walks on a leash like a dream.  It is hard to believe he was found in a box a few months ago and has spent his life thus far in several foster homes.  I don't know if it is that he is a great dog or I am a great trainer.  I like to think we were both meant to be together so we bring out the best in each other.

There are issues of course.  He is a puppy so he gets excited and wants to play like a puppy.  This makes me nervous around my children.  Because he is a pup and still learning I need to watch him constantly and he can never ever be left alone in a room with my kids until he gets older and better trained.   We using a crate for training which helps a lot.  Like all phases with kids I know this puppy  phase will last.

Being a puppy mama isn't  all that different than a baby mama.  Same rules apply.  They need love, good quality food, exercise and play time, and a consistent schedule.  Like kids, dogs rely on routine.  Waking, feeding, playtime, rest time and then finally bed time should be consistent in order for them to thrive.  A routine is meant to be guiding, not rigid.  Kids and dogs are creatures of habit.  By establishing eating and sleeping times you will be setting your child (or dog) up for a lifetime of healthy habits.

We're back with our dog!

Posted July 13, 2008 at 11:04AM by rockergirrl

This is the journey we took to rescue a puppy from TN.  He was found in a box with 10 other puppies in a Walmart parking lot.  There are so many dogs and mostly puppies on death row in the south due to over population.  Never in a million years did we think we would do this  but once we saw his picture and learned more about rescue we knew this was for us.

We worked with a local rescue organization who pays a pull fee to get the dogs out of the shelter and into foster care in order to be adopted.  They then have a special transport team truck the adopted dogs up North a few times a month.

We left for NH on Friday night.  We stayed at my sisters house because she lives close to where our pick up location was.  On Saturday we headed to the location at 1:00.  The truck was supposed to be there around 1:30 but there was an accident on the highway so it didn't arrive until 3:00.  My parents met us there so we at least got to visit with them while we waited.   When we got to our pick up location there were about 50 other families waiting to meet their new pets.  It was amazing to see so many people waiting and wondering just as we were.  Finally the truck arrived.  This big truck  pulled up with barking dogs who had been driving since TN.  The scene was amazing.  Our first meeting with Winston (now Zimo) was everything we hoped.  He is  adjusting well and settling into his new home.  He is a doll and it feels great to have saved him.

Zimo slept all the way home from NH.  He was amazing.  After spending the night in the truck from TN he quietly took another 3 hour drive back to VT.  Once home he had some play time in the back yard and a tour of the house but it was late so  we had to get the kids to bed.  He immediately got into his crate and has had no problems using it since.  Amazingly enough he slept through the night.  We had him in the crate in our room and we heard not a peep until 4:30 this morning.  We took him outside and then back in his crate when we then slept until 7:00.  The boys were delighted to see hit loves to play ball.  He seems to know some basic commands fairly well.  He sits pretty well on command and fetches and drops the ball.  He has clearly decided I am his Alpha Mama and follows me everywhere I go.  We are exhausted but so happy.

Tonight we leave on our trip to NH to pick up our new dog.  We will stay overnight and then pick him up tomorrow at 1:00.  I am so excited and nervous.  This has been the longest week ever.  I feel like a nesting mother in waiting.  Sometimes I don't know why I am choosing to add more chaos to my daily life but I know in the end he is going to be such a good addition to our family.

Update on the dog search

We have finally found our dog!  After many months of searching, scouring the internet for info on all types of dogs.  This little guy will soon become ours.  We are getting him through a local rescue place here in VT who rescues them from the South where there are so many dogs and puppies.  I originally was not going to get a puppy but he feels so right that the hard work will be worth it.  I am fortunate to be home full time so I can be with him all day every day.

Next Saturday is our pick up day.  Just enough time to get the house ready but not too long for our hearts to have to wait.

what do you think?  Is he a cutie or what?

The search for the perfect dog

Posted July 2, 2008 at 7:03AM by rockergirrl
www.findbarefootbooks.com

We are on the search for the perfect dog.  One would think we were trying to adopt a kid.  I think I have been through more home visits, phone interviews and written applications than Angelina Jolie.  I was spoiled by having the perfect dog already.  His name is Silis and he is a 14 year old lab/whippet mix.  He was on the small side and super mellow, sleek black fur and not jumpy or annoying.  I co-raised him for many years.  He now lives with his father full time but we have watched him over the years when the father travels.  It has been a great situation.

We are now ready as a family to get our own.  Of course my first pick would be to get another lab/whippet mix but of course finding Silis for $10.00 in the paper 14 years ago was a total fluke.  I haven't had as much luck this time.  So we started researching Greyhounds since they are in the same family as a whippet.  There are many misconceptions about Greyhounds.  They are not hyper, they don't need a ton of exercise (labs actually need more) and they are great family dogs.  They do come with some special needs though.  They can never never ever be left off leash.  These dogs go from 0 to 40 MPH in three strides.  Any moving creature will set them off and they will be miles away before you even realize they are gone.  Their personalities seem like a perfect match for us but I think I want a dog I can easily have other people watch for us if we need to.

We don't want a purebred.  Too much money and typically the dogs have more health problems.  I also cannot justify it when there are so many homeless dogs out there.

So I am back to looking for a lab/golden/something else mix.  I have found several rescue places here in VT that work with getting dogs from the South.  I guess there are a ton of dogs in need of homes in the South.  Way more than up North.  Lots of puppies too.

If you too are looking for the perfect pup you can check out this great website Petfinder.com
I basically live on it daily now.  You can search your area for dogs that are available.

Do you have a great family dog?  What kind is it?

Keep your fingers crossed I find my forever friend soon.

You should be going through this process to find a dog! I adopted a dog from the South twelve years ago and she was fabulous. Thea was (I say was because I had to put her down this past Oct. 31. She was 13 and sick and had had enough....tears.) the most charismatic dog I'd ever been with. She was a mix of hounds, so she definitely needed the exercise, but she was great off the leash and was an explorer. She was also very loyal and listened well to commands. When I got her, the moment she saw me she lit up and wagged like crazy. As I knealt down next to her she sat on my lap. I'd recommend that mix any day.

Oh I agree the process should be this way. We have wanted to take it very slow. It has been about a year now since we started on this journey. So I had another home visit today with the local rescue place I spoke of. There are two pups we have in mind that would be brought up from the south. The next transport date is July 12 so if we actually decide on one we could have it that soon! I am so excited. Now we just have to decide which one!

good luck dog searching!
we have a lab~ she's 7 and she's SUPER loving. I'd steer away from a dog you can't let off the leash. Our dog is out all the time and with kids, it's a pain to go off finding the dog...that's just my 2 cents...I do wish you luck!
