Sneaky Chef Question of the Week: Lunch Ideas

Posted October 19, 2007 at 1:51PM by sneakychef
Sneaky Chef

Hi Everyone,

The question this week comes from Sticky Mommy at http://www.mybaby.com/Sticky_Mommy

"Quick Lunch suggestions
I need some lunch ideas for my 3 yo. She loves PB & J and I'm not fond of giving her that much sugar. But I need something quick for me to make."

With so much going on right now in the media about The Sneaky Chef book, it's nice to take a break from it all and talk about what's really most important, getting out kids to eat healthier.

Lunch is an important meal for all of us, especially kids. It fuels the better part of the day. But eating too heavily can slow kids down to a crawl, making them less attentive in class and less active over all.

Here are some quick and easy lunches you can make that kids love, with protein, whole grains and packed  with healthy sneaky veggies for long burning energy:

--Guerilla Grilled Cheese
--Quick Fixes for Tuna Fish Sandwiches
--Packed Pizza Bagels
--Covert Quesadillas with White Bean Puree Variation, and Chicken Quesadilla Variation.

With nutrition like this, your kids will be ready to tackle the day, while not being too stuffed to move!

With healthiest regards,

Missy

  Life is crazy but wonderful.

Those are great tips, it is so hard to come up with good, nutritious foods for lunch every day. Especially something the kids will like.

To My Readers, With Gratitude...

As you may have noticed, there’s been a lively dialogue going on about The Sneaky Chef in the media over the past few days. As this discussion has unfolded, I have been truly overwhelmed by the outpouring of support I have received from Sneaky Chef fans on MyBaby.com and worldwide, who have made their passionate, articulate opinions known across the Internet! It is a pleasure and a privilege to be connected to parents who are so deeply committed to their children’s health and well-being.

I am extraordinarily moved by everyone’s kind words, and more grateful than I can say for all of your help in making The Sneaky Chef a household name.

My Best to You and to Your Families,

Missy

I love my job, it gives me a break from my kids!

I know! I can't believe she ripped off your idea? When are you going on Oprah to set the record straight?

Hi, I just responded to rockergirls post, I haven't been around and I didn't see this one. I agree with sticky mommy, and hope you get to set the record straight somehow, besides the Seinfields have more money than God,we wished it would have been you on Oprah instead. But all of us that saw the show were thinking of you while watching and knew that she was full of shit and ripping you off! Good luck.

Sneaky Chef Question of the Week: Quick and Healthy Breakfast

Another great question this week from Rocker Girrl: http://www.mybaby.com/rockergirrl/

"I need help with breakfast. My kids get low sugar cereal, fruit and and english muffin during the week. I don't have the time to make pancakes or eggs during the week so we save those for the weekends. Can you suggest any other healthy but quick breakfast foods?"

Dear Rocker Girrl,

Your kids are doing pretty well by most standards these days. A quick and easy addition to the weekday morning routine would be to have some instant protein on hand to balance the sugar and carbs in the fruit, cereal and muffins they're getting now.

I don't know what they're already smearing on the english muffins, but try a tablespoon of low fat cream cheese, peanut butter or a slice of low fat cheese or turkey; the fats and protein in these quick additions will result in a far longer burn time than they've been getting now with the carbs.

You can also send them off with some of my "Breakfast Cookies" in their pockets for later. They contain whole grains and low fat ricotta cheese, and you can make them as far in advance as you like and store them in the fridge or freezer. Kids love 'em because they're called "Breakfast Cookies," but in reality they're packed with nutrition and just shaped like a cookie. My husband can't get enough of them either! By the way, you can also make pancakes and store them in the freezer, then just toast them up in the morning!

That should keep 'em until lunch, and no extra time for you in the kitchen.

With healthiest regards,

Missy Chase Lapine

Only Gal in a house full of boys (even the dog & rabbit)

I like how you "sell" it to the kids by calling things ice cream or cookies. What kid is going to fight you over cookies? Very creative.

Great suggestion, I never thought of adding some protin in with the cereal. Cheese on the side, please.
