Warning on DVDs for Babies

Here is the headline from Yahoo HealthDay:

DVDs Don't Produce Brainy Babies

August 7, 2007 08:40:43 PM PST

TUESDAY, Aug. 7 (HealthDay News) -- DVDs and videos that claim to help boost infants' ability to learn new words may actually hinder their language development, a new study says.

For every hour a day spent watching baby DVDs and videos, infants between 8 and 16 months old understood an average of six to eight fewer words than infants who didn't watch them. The baby DVDs/videos had no positive or negative effect on the vocabulary of toddlers ages 17 to 24 months.

The study, which included more than 1,000 families with infants or toddlers, was published Tuesday in the Journal of Pediatrics.

I love my job, it gives me a break from my kids!

I just emailed this to my husband b/c he was feeling bad that our 2nd wasn't watching the DVD's like our first did. But I told him it's not a substitute for reading and explaining things to the kids.

I use the DVDs or TV if I need some time to get stuff done, not as a learning tool. Kids learn so much more from interaction, via playing, parents, daycare, etc.

My 2 cents.

  Life is crazy but wonderful.

I agree I never used the tv or dvd as learning tools. Kids are like sponges they learn from just being around everybody and being read to.

I guess I never understood how people ever even thought that having their babies watching tv was good. the Academy of Pediatrics has always advised that 0 hours of tv watching (yes this include dvds) be watched by children under the age of two. I hate with a passion baby einstein dvd crap for babies. It is complete garbage.

honestly..I give it up to Blue's Clue's and Dora for letting me take a shower all last year. it was the only way, but once I was out, the tv was off! she rarely watches tv now cause all it is IS CRAP. we watch movies but they are together as a family. now that dd is 3 we are having fun playing school at home and I'm such a proud Mommy and see her achieve new things each day. At 3yrs. 4mo.'s she is writing the letter A and T and X and O. We've almost got P down. Boy they are little sponges at this age

I am not against tv for children over 2. My kids watch tv. I believe it can be educational at a certain age when used correctly. Have I ever stuck my kids in front of the tv because I need a break? Hell ya. What I am against are these companies who produce these baby dvds and sell them to parents for their babies.
