Tip for talking about the day

With a lot of us sending our kids off to preschool and school these days I thought  I would share a good tip a friend recently gave me.  A mother reminded me of it today when she as asking me how much my  child described their first day of school yesterday.  I used to struggle with this when he went to preschool.  I would pick him up, get in the car, ask him what he did during the day and I would get the same response of "I don't remember."

I have since learned that kids are not good with open ended questions like that.  A friend gave me a good tip to do instead.  At the dinner table each night have everyone (including the adult/s) name one favorite thing and one least favorite thing about their day.  This line of questioning is better suited for young minds and I bet you will find they end up sharing way more than just one thing once the conversation gets going.

  Life is crazy but wonderful.

This does work, I have used this with my daughter since she was in preschool. She always has an answer when I ask her questions like this. I also what was fun about today? What wasn't so fun? I asked this one day and found out she was being bullied so it works. Good suggestions.

  LatteMommy

funny you mentioned this cause just last night i asked DD what was her favorite thing about gymnastics and she said "I don't know". I asked her what she did not like about it and she replied "I don't know I scared" meaning she did not want me asking her those ?'s. That is my frustration with her lately. When she doesn't want to do something she replies "I'm scared". DH and I can't figure it out. Another phase. She's into making up her own stories right now and they are all over the place. We just listen and laugh and enjoy.

I love my job, it gives me a break from my kids!

Great idea - we do this around the dinner table or when we don't eat together at night time. I asked my DD & DH last night what their favorite part and hardest part of the day was.
DD said when they played at the park
DD said when he got a big hug from DD & hardest was all the cleaning (non-stop).
