tell, me, is my kid dumb?

dishing the dirt, cleaning the chaos

ok, I don't think he is but people* have said (about my 2 y.o.)

  • have you had his hearing checked?
  • he doesn't talk very much
  • his sentences aren't more than 2 or 3 words
  • he's really loud

I also swear that certain people are suggesting he's stupid...I'm hurt and I think it's wierd to have to defend your 2 y.o.

What I know is this- if they understand and respond and the development improves, they are okay, no matter how advanced the sentences are...what are they supposed to be saying at two???  I will be googling this topic and I'll go back to my child dev books- poor little guy.

 I can't even remember because I've been raising a 1 and 3 y.o. at the same time- it's a blur...

In my humble opinion; maybe the opposite - I think you have a genius. Short sentences; less is more, right? (ok, that's the poet in me talking) He dosen't talk much; not much to say or only says what's important. He's really loud; so he doesn't talk much but when he does he's loud? Maybe he feels no one is listening...

If you are still having regular checkups with your ped and you are concerned ask her or him if you should be concerned.

Sounds normal; a genius at work!

Peace.
/Dave

dishing the dirt, cleaning the chaos

yeah, me too...he's loud because he's the youngest in a house of three boys, a 100lb lab, a cat and a distracted mom...gotta run, he just dumped the cat's waterbowl on her head!

My son is also 2 and he does not say much. I put it down to us (hubby and I) not talking much either.

I was told by a friend that her son did not say much until he was 2 1/2.

Dreams are free, reaching them is priceless

I was told by my brother in law, who is a psycologist (sorry for the spelling) that I needed to get my then 18 month old DD an intervention as she was not so verbal. I made the mistake of asking my mother and she said the i told you so bit and get her the help. My mind and heart kept telling me to wait, she will talk when she is ready. And Boom when it hit she picked up on every word we said. She is 2 now and still jumbles but says alot of very clear sentences. He will talk when he is ready. To the people who ask silly questions or give you their advice just thank them and nod and say gee I will really take that into consideration but you know whats best for him. Trust your instincts.

Don't worry and forget those other people. Your child will talk when they are good and ready. Loud cause they are competing against the other children in the house.
TRUST ME WHEN I SAY THIS TO ALL YOU MOMS.......
Please if you are taking your kids regularly to the Ped and they are fine then LET THEM BE when it comes to talking....they WILL talk on their own when they are good and ready.... DON'T FORCE THE TALKING WITH ANY CHILD...THEY WILL COME TO A POINT WHEN THEY WILL NOT SHUT UP FOR ONE SECOND SOME DAYS AND DRIVE YOU COMPLETELY INSANE!!! IT'S EXCITING TO HEAR THEM TALK AND SAY NEW WORDS, BUT DON'T RUSH EM, THEY'LL GET THERE AND THEN TELL YOU HOW IT REALLY IS! LOL .....
Yup got a 3 1/2 yr. old girl who does not stop talking from the moment she wakes up in the morning till she finally falls asleep at night! Can't think for myself anymore unless I lock myself in the bathroom. LOL.
Some kids says short sentences cause they are so dang smart they are taking it all in around them and LOOK OUT.... your little genius will surpass your intelligence in no time! Start saving your $ for a genius college fund now.

Oh sweetie, don't be hurt...Just ignore such people and move on in life...I've read somewhere that kids who develop late speech are ones who actually speak well at the later stages...And common your kid is just 2 years old, what more can you expect?I think this level of speech development is just normal....Don't worry,be happy...

Hi there again,
I just wanted to share one of my favorite quotes that I think fits here:

"Lions don't have to roar"

Peace.
