rockergirl you are so NOT alone on this. I was listening and talking with other Mothers down here in MD and they were discussing a similar issue with their children. The majority of them were discussing home schooling and possibly pulling their children out of public school and home schooling them. This is making me nervous for when my dd is ready to go to school. I'm dealing with the preschool issue right now of finding a good one and then just hope the schools we want her to go to will be right for her and her education. I will read up on the No Child Left Behind act. Thanks for opening my eyes and early.

even though this is Wikipedia it is a good place to start to give you a quick run down of the NCLB act and it offers the major arguments on both sides. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Child_Left_Behind#Narrow_curriculum

Life is crazy but wonderful.
Isn't ironic that republicans want less federal regulation, yet they champion this bill that has major federal regulation? I guess when the regulation is for social programs, not corporations and trade it is different. The first place to start is with Peter Welch, he is our congressman and this is where it starts, than go to Leahy and Sanders in the senate. Also, contact Nancy Pelosi, through her speaker website, she sets the congressional agenda. I do not like the NCLB act, like I posted earlier. I think it is frustrating to all involved. I do not think the answer is to home school, that will change nothing, and only the better off in our society have this option, we need to advocate for all children, no matter their parents finances, or educational ability to teach their children. I will start writing Peter Welch about this bill. Did you find when it was up for renewal yet? I haven't had time to look, I have been working on SCHIP.

Thank you vtmom. I didn't know where to start so I started with contacting Bernie's office. I will also contact Peter Welch. I just heard back from Bernie's camp and they said it is up for renewal soon but they do not have the exact info yet. They did send me a bunch of great info I can share with you if you want. I can't just sit back and let this happen. I want to do all I can to help the cause.

Will the next one be ginger too??
As a teacher and a parent, I am saddened when people pull their kids out of public schools and plop them in private institutions. The message this sends is that our public schools aren't good enough and that the community doesn't support them. What truely needs to happen is that parents need to get involved in their children's lives and schooling and support their learning needs. This would reflect in the school's test scores and therefore their funding. Unfortunately, I see so many parents who expect the schools to raise their children when they need to start at home!! What Rocker Girl is doing, contacting the Gov and talking with teachers is a major step in the right direction. I wish more parents would follow your lead!!

Bernie's office is very helpful. Peter Welch, although he is new, is in a very important committee in the house. I have been writing about SCHIP and the more I write the more I figure out. We need to stand together on issues like this. We can't give up on our schools. You know, just a thought, there are a lot of republicans in the government that want to do away with the dept of education, and do not believe education is a right. Maybe this law was a way of discouraging parents to the point they take their kids out of school and reduce the dept of education. IDK, this is the conspiracy theorist in me:)

dishing the dirt, cleaning the chaos
great topic - INSIGHTFUL ....since I am visiting private schools and observing my son in his public school classroom this week. I don't have the kind of time to wait out political headaches....he grows and as each year moves along, I have less time to turn him on to learning and so in a split decision, if he's not getting enough, private school is a smart choice...except it costs a lot- although, in all honesty, private school for a year is cheaper than preschool for a 2 year old (by like 2k/yr)...so, if I have to pay that much for fricken preschool...I guess I just have to find a magicaL MONEY TREE TO PAY FOR PRIVATE SCHOOL...darn...Oh, and VTMOMof2...AWESOME resources, thank!rockergirl, I feel for you!let me know when you want to start that school :)lol!
