This activity is fun and easy...my three year old loved it... and the two year old (he was one then) helped out. You could even use playing cards once your child gets better at the concept- I think I'll try that now that ds is four and counting is easier.
Supplies
Two sets of image cards by theme. Let's say, for this example, transportation is your theme.
You would need anywhere from 5 sets (for younger 2yos) to 25 sets with various vehicles on them.
For example:
- 2 fourwheelers
- 2 ambulances
- 2 gondolas
- 2 scooters
- and so on
Where to get the cards? Make them! How?
First, gather notecards and laminating rolls (the craft kind is easy & cheaper than "laminating" machine-style).
Then:
- Print off two copies of photos, internet images, magazine cut outs, etc.
- OR draw in simple, black and white (that is, if you can draw)
- OR go to the thrift/bargain store and find old books/magazines/encyclopedias
- OR buy two sets of image cards in the clearance/bargain section (baby einstein cards, etc.)
- Cut out images
- Rubber cement them to the cardstock
- Laminate (optional)
Theme ideas:
- our house (take pictures of things in your house :)
- farm
- foods
- rainforest
- snakes
- colors
- pretty much anything
Directions
With your child, lay out a row of cards along the floor. Give him or her the set of matches. Have him or her travel along finding the appropriate match. When all the matches are complete, take a picture. Gradually add images until the train of cards is really long. It's a fun activity.
