Frozen Bananas
PrepTime: 5 minutes

Bananas - A great staple to have on hand, frozen bananas are the nutrient-dense, sweet, nonfat, thickening base for quick homemade ice cream, smoothies, and milk shakes. Most athletes appreciate the energy delivered by bananas' high levels of potassium, as well as their complex carbohydrates for slow-burning energy. Since they neutralize stomach acid, they are easily digestible, even when children are feeling a little queasy. Bananas are so mild that they're often given to babies as their first solid food.

" Bananas are binding," we've been told, meaning they help alleviate the discomfort of loose stools. Yet they also contain as much fiber as a slice of whole grain bread and the pectin of an apple, both of which maintain good intestinal health.

In addition, bananas contain tryptophan, a very calming nutrient. They can replace the electrolytes lost from bouts with diarrhea and even help build better bones by improving the body's ability to absorb calcium. As if that weren't enough, bananas nourish the " good"  bacteria in the colon (probiotics), the stuff that promotes wholesome digestion and strengthens the immune system.

Use these frozen bananas in shakes.

Ingredients:
  • ripe bananas

Steps:

Peel and break each one into 3 or 4 pieces. Freeze in sealed plastic bags to use in shakes and other recipes.
