up at night

Posted January 7, 2008 at 9:06PM in Q and A by hawcat | Back

Hi all, I need help.  My youngest daughter is not sleeping through the night.  She wakes up and the only way she'll go back is if I nurse her.  She is 15 months and started waking up again. HELP, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, SERIOUSLY.  I hope to get her off the breast within the next month or so.

I hear ya. I have 14 month old twins and they are getting up at night AGAIN, too!!!! I think it's because of their teeth (coming in) BUT I'm dying without my sleep!!!!! One will go back down with a bottle, but my other little guy wants to be rocked back to sleep and by the time he's sleeping I'm awake.

Try figuring out as to why she wakes up frequently.May be she is feeling uncomfortable about something, may be she needs pin drop silence in her surrounding when she has to sleep or things like that..I understand it is hard...Hang in there for sometime coz as a mother you are bound to make such sacrifices.I know it is really really hard to have disturbed sleep but you just have to let this phase pass..

children go through phases and will continue to wake up at times during the night well into the two's. Changes in their growing and development cause this. She wants to nurse because this is the most comforting thing for her. You may find even when you wean her her night time waking could continue or stop and then start up at times. Between teething, growing spurts and developmental changes children do this on and off from the time they are born until around twoish. It is all a part of a growing child.

Where am I and what have they done to my body?

my son did the same thing. It was short lived though, just like rockergirl said, probably a growth spurt or something. Shortly after he was weaned and he didn't wake at night for a long while but he's nearly 2 now (birthday in 1 1/2 weeks) and he is just waking up again at night but now it's because he thinks he needs a hug or he needs his blanket back on him. So I think it just will keep happening from time to time. Hey, I still wake at night for no reason too. ;)

I love my job, it gives me a break from my kids!

I nursed until my youngest was 17 months & I stopped nursing him at night around 10 months. At 6 months they don't need any extra caliores to make it through the night. Try giving her a bottle of water to let her know you're not going to give her the breast at night. Also is she falling alseep at the breast b4 bed or nap time? Try to ween her from that. Nurse her, then read a story so she doesn't think breast feeding = sleep.

Good Luck! It will pass, it's just hell living through it! LOL

dishing the dirt, cleaning the chaos

I don't remember anything- it's all a blur :) some nights were better than others but sometimes we'll wake up with three kids in the bed, lol!Not sure I can help but sometimes I'd let them come in bed and doze off, then I'd put them back once they were out...usually I let them co-sleep simply because I was too tired!
