When To Replace Those Cleaning Products!

Posted January 16, 2008 at 9:43AM in Domestic bliss - organization and tips by kittenmama | Back

Keeping your house clean is a necessity but what about that bottle of bleach that has been sitting under your sink for the past two years? Or that container of Comet cleaner which is looking a little sketchy? Here's a quick guide to know when your tools of the trade need some refreshing.

Powder and Liquid Cleaners that change color and consistency should be replaced. "They've probably been contaminated and will be less effective or even dangerous", says Neal Langerman, Ph.D., an officer in the division of chemical health and safety at the American Chemical Society.

Household Bleach that's left over after cleaning should be tossed. Once it has been diluted with water, it loses its disinfecting ability after a day.

Drain Cleaner that has hardened or formed clumps shouldn't be used. You could injure yourself if a piece reacts violently with water inside a pipe and blows out.

Cleaners in Plastic Containers that have become brittle, discolored, or cracked or that have a disintegrating label should be thrown away. these are signs the product might be deteriorating.

Hope these tips help and happy cleaning!

Thanks!it is important that we know this becuse using products which are contaminated will only be less effective in cleaning and does not help solve the purpose..
