tips on potty training???

Posted February 21, 2008 at 11:54PM in Ages and Stages by puamama | Back

my dd was interested at 18 months so i followed her lead and we used the potty at least once a day if not 5X until a few weeks ago.  Now she's not very interested and when I ask her if she'd like to sit on the potty when I know it's been a while she says "diapy".  Hmmm, I guess she's not ready but I was really hoping because we had 4 months of solid practicing.  Any advice would be stellar.
thanks!

just be patient. this is what they do. They show interest and then become uninterested. I don't believe potty training should be forced. Always go by their actions. If she isn't into it right now just wait a while and she will again. My oldest child was not fully potty trained until he was almost 4.

Bribery. I know many will disagree, but it works.

A taste of their favorite candy for potty sitting, more for a deposit. Positive reinforcement though - never punishment for not going.

Also, boys do seem harder to potty train - there I said it...

Be patient, but don't stop the training. Her interest isn't necessary and in fact, she needs to learn that toileting is required as part of her growing up.

It isn't a choice, and it isn't based on mood. You can tell her that you understand she doesn't want to stop playing, or anything else that she may use as an objection, while you sit her down on the potty chair.
