OK. I'm posting, because I want to get other's feelings on this, and hopefully raise a big enough ruckus that not only does the Free Press cover the story, but also because I want the school district to rethink what I consider to not be a brilliant decision. And if you read this in Green Mountain Moms, I apologize for potentially boring you twice!
The Burlington school district has decided to move a teacher from Flynn to Edmunds, because the class size at Edmunds is going to be too big. Of course, as soon as they do this, the affected class size at Flynn will shoot to 25 or more (given that they'll only have two classes where before there were three).
My wife (and several others from Flynn) went to the board of ed meeting last night and it certainly sounded to her like it was a done deal. We received a message from Ms. Collins (BSD Superintendent) who attempted to make a case as to why they're doing it.
I have to say, we've been extremely happy with Flynn thus far. I have a first grader who has had two amazing teachers in Ms. T and Ms. Brooks. Bonnie Ayer has been a great principal and we're very pleased. We are very happy with the social and ethnic diversity in our school. And, as I understand it, we're actually a model for how the rest of the BSD should be set up. Hmmm...
So now, when we have considerably more students than CP Smith (described to me as the school made of golden bricks), and even more than Edmunds -- where they want to move the Flynn teacher -- we at Flynn once again have to rise to the occasion to defend what is a wonderful setting. A setting that only stands to suffer -- along with our children's educations -- by this less than thought out move.
Thanks to the parents, teachers and students from Flynn who made our case last night at the board meeting. I hope it makes a difference!
Will we keep going to Flynn school? YES! Will we keep pushing to make it better? YES? But do we have to constantly be made to feel like we're less important, less vital, or lower citizens because we're on the far end of town? NO!
I would love to hear what others out there think, feel or know about this topic!
