Bring on the poop- Help!

Posted May 1, 2008 at 2:23PM in Parenting General by joyfulmommy906 | Back

Hannah, turn on your ears!

Hi. I was wondering if any of you moms out there had any suggestions for me: My little girl, Hannah has been constipated for almost a week now. Last night, I was up at 1 and 2 with her and she was able to be relieved of some of it with stomach pain. I know that she has to have more in her little tummy but it is not coming. I have tried prunes, rasins, grapes (cut up), veggies, fruits, and other high fiber foods. I need to get some prune juice, but I don't like giving her much juice...Help! I don't like seeing her this way.

Also, If anyone has any advice to give on skin eczema and itching, I would appreciate the help. She suffers from very sensitive skin and sometimes her constant itching and pain from the eczema is uncontrollable. Should I try some sort of diet?

Thankyou

Sarah

Where am I and what have they done to my body?

increase fluids (water, diluted juice) and decrease sugar (including bread and milk temporarily) prune juice will do the trick quickly but it will give her gas. and it's not that you're giving her juice all the time, this will be for a reason so i think it will be ok. warm Chamomile tea helps a lot. A warm bath and even a baby glycerine supposotory (you can get it at any drugstore). and feel free to call her doctor. Almost a week being constipated at her age can be really bad. they won't think you're silly for callingat all. that's what they are there for.

  Life is crazy but wonderful.

kelardo is right, baby glycerine suppository will work. I had to use one on my daughter when she was small. She would hold her poop, for some reason I'm not sure about. For the eczema baking soda paste. Mix baking soda with enough water to create a paste then rub on the skin. I used to have eczema and this is what my mom would do on my hands, it would sooth the itching. Also there are medicines available for eczema now. My daughter also has eczema and I brought her to the doctor. I got a prescription for a cream that worked wonders.

Goofing around with my babies - Big and Lil

My son had constipation problems since he started solids. I have felt really bad for him when he was struggling. Prune juice made at home has worked wonders. Make prune juice at home with raisins. Use lot of them and keep giving that to her as juice until it helps. My best advice is to please talk to the doctor.

  Time? What's that?

Diluted juice w/ water may help the constipation. You can get pure unsweetened prune juice for this although it is a little bitter. Or as others have suggested try the suppositories. My daughter has eczema as well. We limit baths which can dry the skin. And don't use any bubble bath or soaps. When we wash hair we do it at the end and rinse her off well so the shampoo doesn't stay in contact w/ her skin. Then pat her dry and immediately put on a really good body lotion. Find one that is good for sensitive skin. We like the borage loation by Shikai, pediactric one. Also things like Eucerin. Be careful b/c even "natural" ones you get at the health food store can have scents or irritants in them. And we have a Rx for some creams (one is hydrocortisone) from or dr. when it gets really bad, esp. at night if its really itchy. You need to maintain it at all times b/c it can get out of hand so easily. But its hard to get a kid to stop scratching! And make sure that everyone who cares for her follows those rules. Good luck!

It sounds like it is time to talk with your doctor. He or she can make suggestions that might be a bit stronger than fruit juice, and act quicker too!
