Music During Pregnancy?

Posted May 30, 2008 at 7:22AM in Birth Stories by Ricardo | Back

I was wondering how many ladies here made a point of listening to a specific kind of music for relaxation during pregnancy?

I know of one woman who borrowed some classical CDs to listen to during hers, and I also read about a musician who recognized a piece of music, with no previous knowledge of it.

It turns out that his mother had been practising the passage on cello while she was carrying him.

Goofing around with my babies - Big and Lil

I used to listen to music during pregnancy and now my 16 month old son enjoys music. I guess it works.

yep...mozart for your mind. I think it worked because my kid is musical. Well, it could be genetic too cause my dad plays music...who knows!

I love my job, it gives me a break from my kids!

I heard that on NPR. My DH played the Beatles for the 1st and for the 2nd who seems to love music more, we didn't do anything. go figure.

My Husband and I like to sing Karaoke. We have a machine at home so we practice the songs we want to sing before we go. I sang a lot during my pregnancy. At home, in my car, karaoke, in the shower. One song that I practiced a lot is titled "Do Ya" it is sung by KT Oslin. When we brought my son home and he was really fussy I started to sing that song and he calmed right down. He loves to listen to us sing...he gets quiet and appears to enjoy just listening. I can't wait to see if he turns out to be a singer as a result.

When I was carrying my baby girl, I would always listen to music in the car, the shower, the house, pretty much everywhere. When I brought her home, she kept crying and my husband gets very bad headaches, so I grabbed the first thing I could find. This happened to be my ipod and when she started listening to it, she calmed down and fell asleep. She has her own stereo in the nursery now.

There are many situations where a baby has some knowledge that seems impossible.

I listened to some music while carrying my twins, but they both turned out to be geniuses with cars when they were older, and were attracted to them when they were very little. This proclivity was something that came from their father and not me!

Don't you think the father's genetic tendencies may play a role in the child's innate abilities?

I plan on listening to anything in particular when I was pregnant.....just whatever was on the radio. I also listened to talk radio a lot and one of my kids talks all the time. I wonder if there is a connection there. lol

I don't believe in stories about recognizing music and what not just because the mother listened to some whilst pregnant. However, if you feel you'll be more relaxed with a certain type of music, go for it.
