I would look at the child's diet and make changes there before trying medication. There is a ton of info online about diet and ADHD.

Unfortunately, this has been the mom's approach for the last 2 years, and the boy in question is entering 3rd grade. The youngest, a girl, is suffering delayed speech problems and she may have to enter a Developmental Learning Program to deal with that, and some of the nervous responses she exhibits, like biting her hand when people get noisy, a behavior she has developed while dealing with her older brother's behavior.

if mom ain't happy, ain't nobody happy
wow. tough call. I would never medicate before second grade because they are so little. there is a point though where trying different options might be worth the risk.

I have tried the diet changes, to no high fructose corn syrup in our house. I have tried several different ways of diciplining him. NOTHING worked. With the help of my son's doctor who he's had for almost 2 & 1/2 years now. It's quite un-nerving when your told by your son's daycare that he has ADHD at the age of 3yrs old and they won't keep him any longer unless something is done.I went and saw a doctor and let me just say, if he didn't have his medication. Things in our household would be shear maddness. It depends on the child I feel really. But for my son, you could tell he was ADHD. And when he's not on his meds, it's like a rocket about to launch every 2minutes. It's quite annoying, but we love him all the same. He is more of himself on the medication rather than.... here there and everywhere. And outgrowing the problem. I had ADHD when I was a child, and now I have adult ADD. It's something some children never outgrow. I wish I could have, but it's something that keeps me pinned down constantly.

Who diagnosed the child? If they obtained the diagnosis from the pediatrician, I would not medicate until I had taken him to a more in depth evaul. Since he is in the third grade, or will be soon, I would ask for a referral to a neuropsychologist. A good neuropsycholgist will do some in depth IQ testing among other tests and should give good results on a childs strengths and weaknesses. I find that a lot of children who have a dx. of ADHD are expected to perform on a level that they simply cannot which makes the problem much worse. Add to it a possible wrong diagnosis and its a real problem. "The child" gets blamed and punished for their disability. As far as meds. I wouldn't medicate until I researched all possible side effects. I am not against meds and we've tried many with my daughter for various reasons(ADHD was not the primary)but we did not find that meds did anything other than cause undesireable side effects.

You may consult the pediatrician for the proper ways to treat the kid. You may give him lot of plays at daytime for him to rest early at night.
