POOL FEAR!

Posted June 9, 2008 at 4:46PM in Ages and Stages by Kelmcmom | Back

Diggin the motherhood gig

Hey so it s summer time and its a HEAT wave in the north east. So a refreshing dip in the pool should keep the family cooled off right? Wroooonnnggg. My lil water baby wanted NOTHING to do with the pool. She loves the sprinkler, baths and splashing....but a pool? No way momma!

She is about 14 months old.....last year she was 4/5 months old in summer and loved being in the pool and getting her little feet in the ocean (I assume she just was not aware of her surroundings as she is now).

My Husband is so disappointed but I keep telling him its just a phase..........or at least I hope it is!!!

I love my job, it gives me a break from my kids!

I'm afraid of what the kids leave behind in the pool, but that's another subject...

Are you talking about a big pool or a kiddie pool? If it's a big one, try a smaller size so she has control and can stand up, sit down or jump around (jump, jump jump!).

If it's the full size version, don't force it, she'll come around. And you can always try some toys that she can only play with in the pool.

BTW Great photo!

Where am I and what have they done to my body?

I'd rather that than a daredevil that thinks nothing of running to any body of water, honestly. But my little guy was the same way last summer and this summer again he was a little timid at first but we ease him into the kiddie pool and he eventually has a great time. I tried this year by adding a little of the hot water from the tap via a big bucket and the slightly warmer water really made a difference. he even said "that's nice, Mama"

dishing the dirt, cleaning the chaos

yeah, I agree with sticky...plus, you can actually relax more if she's not jumping into the pool...like kelardo said

I would feel blessed at such a sensible child with a well developed sense of self preservation!

She may never take to the water as you would like her to, but we are all different and I am sure she will find other entertainments if she maintains her fear of the pool or large expanses of water.
