Ghetto or Fabulous? My son’s 2nd birthday

Posted June 19, 2008 at 5:26PM in Ages and Stages by Sticky_Mommy | Back

I love my job, it gives me a break from my kids!

Tell me if I’m being ghetto, or smart for recycling, or lazy. We’re having a party for my son on Saturday and I’m not trying to invite the world or spend a lot of money. Here’s what I’m doing and how much it’s costing me.

He’s turning two and our theme is “Ivan and the terrible twos”

  1. Skateboard piñata -  $12.00
  2. candy we have around the house for piñata - FREE
  3. random toys we have to fill the piñata – FREE
  4. bags for piñata candy - $2.00
  5. scheduling the party after lunch & before dinner, snack & beer cost - $30.00
  6. paper crowns - $4.00
  7. homemade cake from a box with frosting - $4.00
  8. paper plates in our closet – FREE
  9. cups, none needed for juice boxes and beer – FREE
  10.  my Mom is bringing hotdogs – FREE
  11.  Duck, Duck, Goose game – FREE
  12.  Homemade invites – FREE
  13.  Stamps - $1.68
  14.  A terrible favor we’re making ourselves – FREE

So far it’s costing us $53.68. The only thing I feel bad about is if my daughter recognizes any of the recycled toys in the piñata.

perfect!!!! Kids that age don't notice. Most parents spend a fortune and stress out so much. They just want to play and eat cake. Not ghetto at all. Smart in my opinion.

The party is for the kids, not the adults, so who cares. Def. not ghetto, a bit cheap, but there is nothing wrong with that. I'm all for the saving money!!!!!!!! :)

  Is it bedtime yet????

totally smart of you!! we spent almost $500 on our daughters 4th birthday party and i cooked up a storm for 2 days.... people drank the beer and ate the hot dogs and hamburgers... i had so many leftovers and inevitabally had to throw a ton of food away... i won't make that mistake again!

The other key thing to a kid party is have it in the middle of the day - right after lunch time. Then you don't have to worry about cooking food for everyone. Playtime and cake time are the main events of the party. Don't make the party more complicated by having it at a time of the day when you would have to provide food.

From what I hear, a kid (ok-semi-adult) I know is STILL talking about her party that was pretty simple - dog party with dog invites (handmade), hot dogs, chips, and musical chairs - she still remembers it fondly almost 34 years later! So don't blow the budget - don't try to out-do the Joneses (those people have 'way too much money anyway!) and enjoy the expressions on the kids as they scramble for the toys and enjoy the pinata!

AWESOME! I LOVE IT. Recycling toys is great. I told my brother that I would recycle my daughters toys and give them to him for my niece who is younger and he said "do that and I'll never speak to you again and buy the most obnoxious loudest toy for your daughter".... so I'm yard selling them. LMAO!

dishing the dirt, cleaning the chaos

great!!! I love this. there's no reason to haul in crap & plastic junk from china just to decorate a party...you've got it going on, girl! this will be a winner. I also just heard of this as the "goody" bags:
make a batch of brownies or cookies and wrap them in tin foil with a ribbon. VIOLA a treat to bring home!
