We do tacos at least once a week because it's easy, inexpensive and good times. We let the kids put what they want in the shells and that way we don’t hear much of "I don’t like that, or that’s gross." It’s good for my weight watcher self to pick what I want, load up on tomatoes, not on cheese.
This makes 10 tacos – 2 tacos per person or left over’s if you have smaller kids.
Shopping list
1 lb. meat – I use ground turkey $3.50 (or if you're a veggie, you've just saved yourself some more $)
1 16 oz. jar Salsa (store brand) $1.79
1 box of 10 Taco Shells $1.99
1 tomato (diced)$0.69
1/2 large onion (diced)$0.44
1/3 head of iceberg lettuce (shredded)$0.23
1/2 cup shredded cheddar $0.56
packet taco seasoning $0.85
10 Tbsp sour cream (store brand)$0.53
2 carrots shredded - $0.26
8 oz can of black beans - $0.99
Total $11.39
What to do
Brown the meat in a large skillet breaking it up as it cooks.
Drain off the fat.
Add the package of taco seasoning and cook per directions.
Heat the taco shells as per the instructions on the package.
Here’s the good times
Bring the meat and all the other ingredients to the table in separate bowls.
Each family member can build their own taco.
Because I’m on weight watchers I skip the cheese & sour cream and add the shredded carrot for color instead of cheese. I also only use one taco shell and pile on the veggies.
Enjoy – I’m hungry now!
