2 weeks into school

Posted September 10, 2008 at 10:45AM in Talk Around The Playground General by vtmomof2 | Back

Life is crazy but wonderful.

Well we are about 2 weeks into the new school year.  This is about the time that routines have started to set in.  My son started kindergarten this year and spent most of the first week or so going to the nurses office.  He was sick in the beginning, but one morning told the assistant at breakfast that he had to throw up, only to let out a loud burp in the nurses' office and declare that he felt better so she sent him back to class.  My daughter has also been sick and was sent home last Thursday and stayed home Friday.  I already got into an argument with one of her teachers over said sickness, since she wouldn't send her to the nurses' office to be evaluated.  So I already lost my temper and it is only 2 weeks into school.   It is also my 2nd week of classes.  I'm taking real property law and family law, extremely interesting classes.  I have already surveyed part of the campus in order to learn how to read surveys, and my family law professor fell and broke her wrist prior to our first class and I drove all the way down to Burlington to be told to go home.  My son has also informed me this morning that he is now 5 and that means he is a big boy and no longer requires my hand to cross the parking lot, or my assistances with breakfast at school.  So I had to let him tackle breakfast line with all the big kids by himself, but the parking lot well he still has to hold my hand.  I can't let him go that much.  How has everybodys back to school time been?

My 1st grader is doing well. It is a new school for him so it was a rough start having to make new friends. My youngest started preschool which is a new program being offered at the elementary school. I was so hesitant about the program and now I am knowing why. It is brand new and the teachers are just not super experienced and it totally shows. The program is free and he is only 3 so I really don't care all that much as long as he gets to play a little bit each morning. But I feel like I am short changing him a bit by sending him there. My older son got to go to an awesome preschool because I was working at the time. This one just sucks. I wish I could give him more. I just have to remember that is more about what I can give him at home and look at it as just a play space for a few hours each day. I don't want anything too structured anyway. I don't know - I just wish I had a better feeling about it.

I know what you mean, I was working when my daughter was in preschool so of course she got the better preschool, but I think at 3 playtime is what is more important anyway. You can focus more on the ABC's and 123's at home and of course reading always makes a difference.
