Knocked Up? Eat your fish - just not these 4

Posted October 8, 2008 at 2:28PM in Nutrition and Meals General by Sticky_Mommy | Back

I love my job, it gives me a break from my kids!

Moms are worried about mercury in fish and we all should be, but the scary part is healthy fish intake for Mom's, babies and toddlers are way down which means we are missing out on omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic
acid (EPA). Those help with vision, mental, cognitive and motor skill development in babies, toddlers and kids.

If you're pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women are recommended to consume
a minimum of 12 ounces of seafood per week (salmon, tuna, sardines), or
DHA-fortified eggs. Right now most Moms only eat 2 ounces.

Four Fish no one should eat because of high concentrates of mercury in them:
  1. shark
  2. swordfish
  3. king mackerel
  4. tilefish (what ever that is)

I like the Bruce shark visual! I'm wondering if the fish intake is also because of the recent news about all the 'dead zones' in the sea that are in much greater quantity than previously thought and people may be worried about that, too. But you're right - the mercury scare is very real. Thanks for bringing this up!

Tuna should be on this list too. Also - young children should eat fish no more than once a week (this includes cans of tuna) because of mercury levels.

Will the next one be ginger too??

Actually they say Tuna is ok in moderation for pregnant women now because of the Omega 3's and fatty acids and all that nonsense. I think they say one meal a week is safe. Which is great because I think I would die without tuna melts.

In that article it says "Mercury content of tuna is lower than that of shark, swordfish or marlin, but higher than that of other commonly consumed fish. Six ounces of the recommended fish per week can come from albacore tuna." And according to my can of Bumble Bee one can is 6 oz.

Go tuna melts!
