Like most Americans I'm cutting back on the gifts this year, not just because of the economy, but also the waste, and I'd rather teach my children & family the value of our time together. Experiences rather then material things.
For my kids we're getting a
bike with no peddles (to help balance for the 2 1/2 year old) and a snowboard for the 5 year old. Yes these are material things, but they can be used outside and will create memories rather then more plastic for the land fill in 5 months.
My parents & other adults are getting the gift of me! This is a great web site to give you a start on how to give your time & how to spend it with people you care about.

On another note, I bought some toys for our toy drive at work and my kids were all fired up because they thought the toys were for them. Any suggestions for teaching them Christmas isn't all about them and the gift they will get?
