No Christmas gifts this year?

Posted December 1, 2008 at 1:38PM in Talk Around The Playground General by Sticky_Mommy | Back

I love my job, it gives me a break from my kids!

Like most Americans I'm cutting back on the gifts this year, not just because of the economy, but also the waste, and I'd rather teach my children & family the value of our time together. Experiences rather then material things.

For my kids we're getting a bike with no peddles (to help balance for the 2 1/2 year old) and a snowboard for the 5 year old. Yes these are material things, but they can be used outside and will create memories rather then more plastic for the land fill in 5 months.

My parents & other adults are getting the gift of me! This is a great web site to give you a start on how to give your time & how to spend it with people you care about. http://www.nochristmasgiftsthisyear.com/.

On another note, I bought some toys for our toy drive at work and my kids were all fired up because they thought the toys were for them. Any suggestions for teaching them Christmas isn't all about them and the gift they will get?

dishing the dirt, cleaning the chaos

well, I think it's getting more and more apparent that "stuff" isn't the answer...but yes, it's in the balance between meaningful and wasteful...love the idea..I've already bought a few plastic things but the rest? fair trade and eco-friendly....and WAY LESS than in years past :).

I agree, there is too much "stuff" wanted by everyone and I just wish my husband would slow down on the shopping b/c the gift buying has just become ridiculous and takes the enjoyment out of all of it.

I still bought too much "stuff" and of course the Grandparents went into overdrive! Next year, I'm going to reduce the present count even more. The kids love the gifts I got them at the toy swap, I will do that again for sure!
