Reminiscing about summer

Posted June 27, 2007 at 9:07AM in Activities, Arts & Crafts by momotogo | Back

I'm loving all the posts dedicated to summers as we remember them:  kind of unstructured, simple pleasures like cremees, sprinklers, bikes and.....road trips.  Anyone have old favorite play-in-the-car games that you're playing with your  kids?  Or, has everyone gone the route of having a DVD player in their car?

I love my job, it gives me a break from my kids!

We don't have a DVD player in the car, but I wish we did. Not so much for the kids, but for me. I hate car rides over 3 hours.

My DH had a video iPod with Dora episodes on it, so we plug that in for our DD when melt down time gets close.

  Life is crazy but wonderful.

We have a portable dvd player and it is going with us when we go camping in Maine this summer.

I won't ever get a DVD player for the car. Blah. We actually drove from VT to KY one year for Thanksgiving Now that is a long drive. I actually borrowed a DVD player for our oldest kid thinking we would need it. He did watch a few but more times than not he turned it off so he could see the sites he said. I felt like in the end we didn't need it . Kids need to figure out what boredom is and find ways to combat it. They are so used to instant plug in solutions. Unplug the drug. Unplug the drug.

well our dvd player is portable so it is up to my daughter if she wants to watch it. All I know is that it will be there just in case.

Thanks rockergirrl. I feel encouraged by your response. It feels too easy to plop my kids in front of a TV screen when I need them to be preoccupied for a period of time. It's the soma (Brave New World) of the 21st century. So how do you keep them engaged and not whining AND unplugged?

dishing the dirt, cleaning the chaos

we had a flip-down in our old tahoe...if I could fork over the $800 bucks to reinstall it in my suburban, I'd do it. I used it enough to appreciate it. I'm DOWN with as much magic school bus as it takes...go ms. frizzle....
